An unspecified number of inmates were alleged to have been shot dead and several others with varying degrees of injuries yesterday during the attempted jailbreak at the Kirikiri Medium Prison, Apapa, Lagos state.
The attempted jailbreak occurred about 4pm yesterday when some of the inmates tried to over power the Prison security to pave wave for their escape. Although what lead to the circumstance is unclear.
According to an eyewitness, a warder attached to the prison who spoke on the condition of anonymity alleged that some inmates who plotted the jailbreak to pave the way for their escape but unfortunately were shot dead.
The warder said the inmates protested for several hours on their conditions in the cell, calling the warders unprintable names.
The source said none of them escaped from the prison as the officials of the Nigeria Prisons Service tried to manage the crisis.
Policemen from Area ‘B’ Police command, Apapa, led by the area commander, ACP Ndubueze Innocent Anene, led teams of policemen from the area command and the eight police station under him to the scene. They were able to control the situation.
A police corporal attached to Kirikiri police station also said they were there to assist the warders. He said the warders shot at the escaping inmates, adding that about 15 of them received bullet wounds.
