Kano Central Mosque Bomb Blast: See Photos

It is a Black Friday indeed for the people in Kano state as what is suspected to be two car bombs rocked the central mosque of the biggest city in Northern Nigeria. 

This happened just as residents were pouring into the place for their Friday prayers. 

"These people have bombed the mosque. I am face to face with people screaming," a local reporter, Chijjani Usman, told Reuters. 

The bomb went off at the Kano Central mosque, close to the Emir's palace. Spokesperson of the Military JTF in Kano, Captain Ikechukwu Eze, has confirmed the incident. 

The explosion is believed to have gone off between 2:00pm to 2:30pm during the preparations for Friday's Jumaat prayers. 

The blast went off before Sani Zahradeen, Imam of the mosque, began his sermon, and was followed by sporadic gunshots. 

Police have cordoned off the area. Casualty figures remain unknown, but many are suspected to have lost their lives.

“Yes it’s true. I actually ordered for it to be specifically built for me by Toplimony. It’s a rare brand of stretch limousine that can’t be found in Nigeria. I bought to celebrate the goodness of God and for our forthcoming anniversary. It’s quite expensive and soon you would see it and show it to the world”.

Little-known Chinese carmaker LandWind launched its £14,000 X7 at the Guangzhou motor show in China last week. 

Its uncanny similarity to the £40,000-plus Evoque’s distinctive design provoked an angry response from Jaguar Land Rover, which may take legal action to protect its brand. 

The British manufacturer has just opened its first car factory in China in a venture with local firm Chery. 

Jaguar Land Rover chief executive Dr Ralf Speth told Autocar magazine: ‘The fact that this kind of copying is ongoing in China is very disappointing. The intellectual property (IP) is owned by Jaguar Land Rover and if you break that IP then you are in breach of international regulations.’

But drivers looking for a fashionable car at a bargain price might want to wait for safety inspection results. 

LandWind’s earlier CV9 people-carrier scored just two stars out of five in European crash tests in 2010.

UNIJOS in chaos as students protest hike in school fees

Students of the University of Jos continued their protests today following yesterday's chaos in the school over what they say is a 100% increase in school fees. ‎The protesting students set fire in front of the school gate this afternoon, insisting that school authority must reduce their fees.

The students say the fee was N27,800 but has now been increased to #60,000. They also say they were forced to pay for developmental levy which has never been used for any development within the university. They said all effort by the student union government to speak with the Vice Chancellor of the university Prof. Hayward Babale Mafuyai, was met with a brick wall as the VC refused to negotiate with the students.


Following his refusal to speak with students, they took to the streets to protest, blocking all roads leading to the university of Jos thereby bringing all activities to a standstill. All university activities was also boycotted including the exams that was meant to start yesterday 24th November.

The protests continued today...

We see it all the time: minor papers (and that's with all due respect to the Express) talk up big name transfers that are guaranteed to command attention and similarly guaranteed not to happen ever. Lionel Messi to leave Barcelona is the story of the day, and I wouldn't put any faith in that one unless ... there ... are ... quotes?

No, today I live in the present. I want to make a great year and win titles with Barcelona. And nothing more. Then we'll see. Football takes many turns... While I always said that I would always stay there, sometimes not everything happens the way you want.

I've said it many times: if I had my way I would stay forever. But as I just said, it's not always given that you get everything you like.

I have lingering doubts as to the authenticity of said quotes, just because they're so explosive, but if this is legitimate it's definitely a major bombshell. As far as I'm aware, Messi hasn't used guerrilla tactics in contract negotiations (unlike, say, Cristiano 'I'm really sad' Ronaldo), and if he's pulling this sort of stunt now he's in a much worse place, Barcelona-wise, than he's ever been before. And that's interesting.

Why is it interesting for us? Because there are probably only four clubs seriously in the running for Messi if he leaves the Camp Nou*. Real Madrid are out for 'I don't want to be murdered' reasons. Most of the rest of Europe's club fail on sporting or economic considerations. And that leaves Bayern Munich as the obvious front-runners, with Chelsea, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain lagging some way behind. Hey! Chelsea! That's us!

*I'm pretty sure he won't, mind, but I'm far less confident in that than I was yesterday.

Push comes to shove I'd put us fourth out of fourth in the the race for Messi even if he should leave Barcelona. There's no love lost between the Catalans and Chelsea, and adding Jose Mourinho to that mix could only make things more volatile. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't make a serious attempt at him, partially based on the fact that he's an excellent player and mostly based on the fact that we could literally make everyone living in Barcelona cry all at once, which would be the culmination of many years good work.

And Mr. Messi, you know what they say: If you can't beat them without Norwegian assistance, you might as well join them.
